Let the 2017 Mountain Biking Season BEGIN!

A Mid-Summer Afternoon at Hartman’s from 2016

Yeehaw! It’s officially mountain biking season in the Gunnison Valley.

Gunnison Trails reported this morning that the BLM has officially made the call to open Hartman Rocks north of the Powerlines today, April 13, 2017. There are a few temporary closures in place. Get the full scoop at the Gunnison Trails newsletter from this morning.

Some Key Early Season Riding Guidelines:

  • All of the roads and trails south of the power line will remain closed for Gunnison Sage-grouse conservation until May 15, 2017. Learn more about Gunnison Sage-Grouse conservation and why it’s so important to the valley over on the Gunnison Trails website. Read all of the guidelines, but the most important rules are to stay out of sage areas before 9 AM and leash your dog in sage areas (which sadly means no mountain biking with your dog early season because riding a mountain bike with your dog on a leash is a good way for you both to get injured).
  • The Enchanted Forest trail is still snow covered and will remain closed until further notice. The south end of Main Street will remain closed until a large impassible snow drift melts.
  • There are still a few snow covered and wet spots along trails and roads, and people recreating on those routes should stay on the trail tread in order to prevent resource damage and trail braiding.

Other Valley Trails:

We’re keeping an eye on other trails in the Valley as well. The Lower Cement Creek Trail is getting close in spots but won’t be rideable until quite a bit more snow melts out. Remember to not push it now as riding trails when they are still too muddy and snowy can cause a lot of damage that trail crews then have to clean up later in the summer.

Speaking of Trail Crews, let’s give a major shout-out to the BLM, the city of Gunnison, and Gunnison County for caring for this amenity! If you’re able, make a donation to support one of the many volunteer organizations that cares for the trails such as Gunnison Trails, the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association, or the Gunnison Valley OHV Alliance of Trail Riders. They put in countless trail days every year to care for our trail networks all over the Valley.
