This week we’ll be passing the torch of our Instagram account off to Devon Balet, an adventure lifestyle photographer that grew up down the road in Montrose. His photography is full of sunrises, dramatic landscapes, bikes, mountains, and the people that make it all so special. Check out some of his photography and answers to our questions below, and make sure to follow both @devonbalet and @mtbhome for some stunning shots.
Why do you visit Crested Butte & the Gunnison Valley?
I grew up in Southwest Colorado and Crested Butte was the first ski resort that I snowboarded. A resident for three years, I ended up moving away due to the amount I travel for work. Every single time I come back I feel at home. Familiar faces and welcoming words from old friends keeps me coming back. Plus, really, can you beat the flowers in Crested Butte in the summer??
What’s your favorite thing to do in the Valley?
Typically I would say mountain biking without a doubt but a year long injury has forced me off my bike. Climbing to the top of mountains and taking in the wide open views tops the list for me now.
What’s your favorite photo op?
Lupine Trail at sunset
What’s your favorite trail to hike/bike?
Doctor Park- one of my top three favorites
What’s your favorite apres spot/beverage?
The Brick Oven is always a great post ride place with a huge beer list and slices hot and ready to devour.
What kind of camera do you use?
I have an extensive collection of cameras but my main rig is a Canon 5D Mark III
What’s your favorite piece of gear?
Favorite adventure partner/photography subject?
Landscape photography is where I started. On family vacations I would always bug my parents to take photos with their camera. Eventually they got me my own and it was all over from there.
Sunrises or Sunsets?
Sunrises are the best in CB.
Man, I should really have an answer for this but I am terrible with names. 401 at peak flower season. That is a dream.
Favorite Gunnison Valley event?
Crested Butte Bike Week is always a great time but schedule conflicts have kept me from attending the past few years. Any bike race that gets me out in the back areas of Crested Butte is a great time.
